Do fomites and surfaces matter for SARS-CoV-2 Transmission?

tl;dr No.

Surface contact is a speculative transmission method that does not play a significant role in the transmission of COVID-19. Any sort of surface treatment, whether a permanent coating, a disinfecting fluid, or passing UVC will have a negligible impact. Please be aware that if you use any of these you are participating in what is known as security theater. We advise people to not engage in risky activities due to the false sense of security that this may cause. Once the technical data on this became clear, we abandoned a nano-copper loaded spray paint called Copper Coater since such a product is irrelevant.

We agree with Goldman’s conclusion that fomite transmission is an unlikely transmission route for enveloped respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 (or influenza), but we argue that virus inactivation on human skin is a more likely bottleneck limiting fomite transmission risk than the quantity of virus deposited on environmental surfaces.
